The papers in this book cover absolute, relative and multiple dating methods, and have been written by specialists from a number of different earth sciences.
Luminescence dating methods are able to provide ages for a variety of sedimentary deposits as they determine the time since the mineral grains were last exposed to light. Thermoluminescence TL and optically stimulated luminescence OSL measurements can be applied to quartz and feldspar grains in the laboratory but a way of analysing samples in the field would be invaluable in determining sampling strategy.
This proposal aims to develop such field equipment based on the infrared stimulated liminescence IRSL from feldspars. Fundamental laboratory studies would be carried out on mineral separates from a variety of sediments whose age is known and the measurement procedure would be tested on sediment cores brought back to the laboratory. This project could lead to the development of a down hole probe for stratigraphical age assessment, with applications in oceanography, engineering and construction.

The U-series component-dating method has been employed to date the sediment core B 1 94 from Balikun Lake. The results indicate that there is a good relationship of the isotopic ratios between the solutions and the residues, and that uranium and thorium isotopic fractionations did not occur during acid leaching. Based on the U-series ages obtained by using component-dating method, a ka time sequence was established corresponding to the upper m interval of the B 1 94 core, which is in agreement with palaeomagnetic dating results.

Course Description: Introduction to mechanisms that drive climate, including the interplay between oceanic and atmospheric circulation and fluctuation in Earths orbital parameters. Examination and analysis of past climate records ranging from historical documentation to ecological and geochemical proxies e. Dating methods used to constrain and correlate climatic periods, utility of computer models to reconstruct past climates and predict future climate change. Course Objectives: We hope to provide an understanding of 1 what drives climate; 2 how ancient climates can be reconstructed; and 3 what are the important questions currently being asked in the field of paleoclimatology and their significance to present and future climate change.
Structure of Course: The class meets 3 times a week. Lectures will introduce topics for the majority of the semester. Five meetings during the semester will be devoted to a seminar-style format where we will discuss current journal articles in various topics of paleoclimatology. Graduate students will be required to hand in a page written critique of each paper. Undergraduate students will be required to hand in at the start of the seminar class a brief paragraph describing the major questions posed in the paper, the methods used to address the questions and the major conclusions a question to address in the class discussion Major, overriding concepts not specific details from each paper are fair game for exam questions.
Journal articles to be discussed in class will be located in a marked folder in the Geology Office Science I. Term Papers: All students enrolled in the course will be required to write a page term paper and submit an outline for topic approval. Graduate students are required to pick their topics and to present their findings orally during the last week of classes.
